You’re eligible to enrol and vote if you are 18 years or older, a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, and you’ve lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more at some time in your life.

There are a number of misunderstandings relating to who is eligible to vote in local elections. Below, we bust some of the most common myths we hear:
NO! You DO NOT have to be a ratepayer to vote in local body elections. You just have to be residing in the district you are voting in.
YES! Typically, those who own property are ratepayers, but you DO NOT have to be a ratepayer to vote in local body elections. You just have to be residing in the district you are voting in.
YES! If you own property in Kaipara District but live elsewhere you may qualify to enrol as a non-resident ratepayer elector and vote in both areas.
